CHAPTER ELEVEN

Sunday breakfast was a typical affair after church, with Nana in the kitchen cooking up a storm and the family talking about their day and the next morning was no exception. What wasn’t normal was the tiny person sitting on Matt’s lap again, stabbing scrambled eggs with a kid’s fork that his nana had rustled up from somewhere. And Nicole wearing a dress she borrowed from his sister, sitting across from him, her hair pulled back in a neat bun emphasizing her big eyes.

They’d considered the risk of attending church, but with Gavin and Kendall going as an advance team and scoping out the area, and then the rest of the McKades securely transporting Nicole, they decided it was safe enough to go. They followed the reverse procedure coming home.

Emilie wiggled, drawing Matt’s attention. Nicole had offered to hold her daughter, but Emilie had insisted on sitting with him. She again said she liked him and despite that bringing a frown to Nicole’s face, Matt’s heart warmed over the child’s declaration.

His phone rang, and he shifted Emilie to get it out of his pocket. When he saw it was Harmon’s lieutenant calling back, Matt stood and set Emilie on the chair. “Gotta answer this, sweetheart.”

“’kay.” She went back to eating, reaching high to get to her plate.

“Excuse me,” he told the others and hurried from the room, answering as he walked.

“What can I do for you, Deputy?” Lieutenant Ackerson asked.

“I’m interested in getting information on Grady Harmon.”

A long sigh came from the phone. “Let me tell you right up front—I won’t share much information about one of my officers.”

“Your commitment to your people is commendable, but I have quite a situation here and need to find Harmon.” Matt explained what had been happening, making sure to keep from mentioning where Nicole was staying so it couldn’t get back to Harmon.

Ackerson let out another heavy breath. “Go ahead and ask your questions, and I’ll decide if I want to answer.”

“Fair enough.” Matt stepped into his dad’s study and went to the window overlooking the backyard. “Is Harmon on the job now?”

“I haven’t seen him for a few days.”

“He called off sick?”

“No.”

“So he’s AWOL,” Matt stated.

“Your word, not mine.”

Translated, that meant, yeah, the guy had not shown up for work. “Tell me about his state of mind before he took off.”

“What about it?”

“Was Harmon happy?” he asked.

“Happy?” Ackerson asked. “What officer is happy on the job? It’s a life-or-death position, you know that. Happiness isn’t something I look for.”

“Maybe happy isn’t the right word. Content.”

“Not so much.”

“Did he share what was bothering him?”

“Not so much.”

Matt curled his hand in frustration. “I know he had a job outside of work and officers have to report companies they work for outside the force. Can you give me the name of his employer?”

“Not so much.”

His repeated usage of those three words was raising Matt’s ire, but he should just be glad the guy agreed to answer any questions. “But he does work as a security guard in his off hours?”

“Yeah.
